Meru University–Kianjai Street Lighting

Turning community concerns into safer public spaces

During a community baraza, residents and students of Meru University identified inadequate street lighting that was causing security issues. Siasa Ya ID

Removing barriers to accessing national identity cards

The Challenge

Young people in parts of Tigania West faced barriers to obtaining national identification documents, including long distances to registration services, associated costs, long waiting periods and limited access to information.

Our Response

Through Siasa ya ID, Luminous Safe Space mobilised young people and communities to understand their rights and navigate the identification process — helping them understand the Registrar of Persons service charter so they could ask questions from an informed point. The initiative combined community dialogues, barazas, digital advocacy and engagement with relevant government stakeholders.

Our Impact

  • 80+ young people reached through offline Siasa ya ID activities
  • Youths aged 18–24 engaged through the structured Siasa ya ID programme over three months
  • Strengthened engagement between young people, communities and government stakeholders on barriers to accessing identification services
  • 5,000+ online reach

How We Create Impact

A model rooted in community ownership

We engage communities through barazas, dialogues and other participatory spaces — creating a platform for community members to identify gaps in public services, infrastructure and governance. We support citizens to organize around shared concerns and develop collective advocacy actions, which enables community ownership of the projects. Through engaging government officials, elected representatives and other relevant stakeholders, we track commitments, submit petitions and maintain dialogue with duty bearers.

When communities have the information, platforms and tools to engage decision-makers, they can influence the development decisions that affect their everyday lives.
